Finally found my paint after mgmt borked the package lockers. The nightstand has been broken down, lightly sanded, and washed. The drawer rollers are tucked away where I can’t get paint on them and the drawer is now primed in white, since I did such a shoddy job the first time around.
When I first built it, I really wanted that green stain, but the supply was lacking and it didn’t stretch as far as I’d hoped, given the opacity. (The blue was money.) Since I couldn’t get more without a several week lead, I took my cue from the Romans and prioritized the facing bits like a hospital gown.
Since its going outside this time around, I am sealing all the surfaces – starting with the last couple rattle cans of primer gathering dust since I got my first airbrush. Its kinda sad how excited I am to recover that eighteen square inches of shelf space.
I haven’t decided what I’m going to do with the drawer front yet, maybe variable width stripes to echo the bench cushion. I need to give it an hour before I can prime the inside edges I should have started with. After that, whatever bare bits are left on the main piece get the same treatment in black and it gets a day to cure.
Primed. Time to finalize design details. I just watched Austin make cut 24 planar cuts with a friggin handsaw – that is dedication to artistry. That geometry was on freakin point. Makes tape stripes seem a little half-assed.
OK, so a hexagonal nod with pinwheeling triangles. I like the allusion to an aperture. It also reflects the angles of the living/hobby space while implying the curves of the sleep/work space. Plus a valknut on top – always wanted to try one. Much taping and cursing to come. Good times.
I may have issues with the painter’s tape on the drawer front. The shape came out fine, but I overcut in places. I sanded down the ditches and filled them in with another coat of primer over the tape, which is now going to be in place longer than I’d like. Hopefully the twice primed edges don’t stowaway when it finally comes up.
I can always touch it up with acrylic. Course, doesn’t have to need touch ups to grab the acrylics. Could also go over the white primer with varying shades of blue – would only need to varnish the top and drawer front. Or drop some frisket and airbrush a top to bottom gradient. I do love to have options.
