Skullcap concept sketches

I didn’t redraw the markings when I exaggerated the shape of the caps, but I like the ratio of cap to stalk better.I may go bit thicker on the jaw, but maintaining the chess piece base shape. The closeup shows the grey-matter inspired gills, and the instructions recommend how not to get a lungful of stinky spores during the last gasp (extraction process).

While I need to review blending modes, definitely a fun exercise. It’s getting easier to start sketching digitally, rather than digitizing a pencil sketch. I may put these up for a bit and review stationary options. Thinking maybe only the main shroom needs to be in color, for identification purposes – perhaps with a top-down view of a cluster. The informational and instructional images can be simple ink sketches.

Maybe reverse the color idea and tie it into the jaw. Green when immature, turning rust from the bottom up as they mature, the lower jaw area and tip of the cap being the last to turn. Best harvested by moonlight, they tend to be fragile when fully ripe (deep orange with no trace of green remaining). Pick and transport with care.

I may have overshot on the jaw proportion, but that’s beauty of digital layers. Also may need to the rethink the color scheme edging toward red, gold, and green. They’re a low-level plant, so maybe better to keep as a ivory-to-bone base with charcoal markings to emphasize the skull aspect. Save the funky colors for the truly weird ones. And definitely go back to the early proportion of the cap to stalk. I feel like the top one is ready to make smart ass comments while the bottom tried to swallow a jack-o-lantern. Maybe meet in the middle on eye symmetry.
