I generally prefer clear outlines and defined line work, but this exercise was an interesting continuation of the process. I never considering inking as an intermediary step. Maybe that’s the issue, maybe if I used a pencil instead of pens, I would remember its supposed to be an undersketch and not a final inking. Would likely speed things up as well.
Starting to feel like a style is taking shape, and it’s a Hanna-Barbera derivative. Good timing too, as this is the last of the exercises in the Drawing with Style module. All that’s left now is Art that Sells and Drawing from Imagination, and both are much shorter.
As much as I love physical media, there is something liberating about digital art. No setup, no breakdown, occassional power tether. OK, near constant power tether, but that’s what rechargeable batteries are for. Should probably start making peace with the end of the line on the iPad 7. Maybe I’ll pickup an Air 5 once the 6 is released. So. many. layers.
I think this is the last “beginner” series I take. Color theory is color theory, be it on minis or in watercolor. Nothing left now but to keep using it. To that end, I think a break is in order before starting the next one, maybe bust out the markers, or anatomy, or go back to the jellyfish in the desert and see what I think now.
