Severed head for G’s birthday surprise party last night. Starting with a full head latex fish monster mask, I stuffed the critical bits with paper towels so they wouldn’t go flat. The first round I overstuffed it and it ended up looking like a weird piranha pillow. I popped the CA and dumped enough to hopefully read more monster head than fish with the tail tucked back. I used CA on about an inch at either end and just behind the fins to form a diamond and patched it with fabric to keep the shape round(er).
The mount is pretty standard foam. The edges are a 45 degree bevel with 30 each on the joint, which got Hold the Foam plus 3 pins and one staple from each side. Probably could have gone 10-15 on the joint. Pretty standard wire brush, PVA with black paint, blah blah blah…
I was concerned about the weight, so the hanger is 12 gauge black anodized aluminum wire, hot glued to the back of the plaque. I forgot to take a picture, but the loop is centered at the top for hanging. It bends down the base to wrap around each corner under the head, then doubles back and glues into the foam.
I caught a little too much of one fin when I was glueing the head to the mount, but it’s rather a one shot deal. Separating it after the fact is just going to pull the paint off the foam and the latex. It’s not the most symmetrical thing I ever made, but it’ll do for a one-night show.
