With the zig finally and definitively off my plate, I was surprised how badly I wanted to build something else. I figured I’d spend a couple weeks painting minis, but I need terrain for Five Parsecs From Home and I really wanted to trash build sans plan.
I ordered a mug, which showed up in packing material with excellent shape potential but crap texture – perfect time to test joint compound dry time and sanded textures in various thicknesses. I split the foam on my hot wire table and grabbed a handful of random greebles from the craft closet. Minion is pretty sure I’m guano, but she’s curious what we’re going to end up with.
I dug out the old base left behind when I used the lich as the figurehead on the shipwreck shack. I added half a rivet to the top and filled in the gap in his robes with some blue stuff. I wasn’t crazy about the texture, or the open middle, but autumn leaves make for lovely camouflage. Objective marker achieved.
My new edibles come in a metal tin with a nifty shape, so I gave it a tabletop makeover. I’m not sure why I super-glued it closed, considering I can barely open it when I mean to.
I like the idea of a modular fan tile that can be used as a freestanding wall, a flat base, or stacked as second story. I fitted an old PC fan into a block of XPS foam and skinned it in black corrugated paper. The fan itself got a light grey prime followed by a messy coat of PVA and black paint for texture. Finished with a bronze dry brush over the top and turquoise verdigris.
Today’s Tom Sawyer comes complements of an uneven coat of gesso to act as a base for the Speed Paint. The corrugation is primarily Camo Cloak with touches of Absolution and Malignant Green under a sepia wash. The trimming is mostly Fire Giant Orange with some random Absolution Green weathering.
The orc tent has been on my hit list for a while, and the the Starfinder packaging had perfect lateral recesses for the poles. I’m pretty stoked with how Scooby-Doo Skull Mountain it turned out. KC said it reminded her of Breath of the Wild and The Mummy. Score. And who doesn’t want to accessorize with a chain of skulls.
This is the first time I’ve use my homemade flocking and I’m pretty happy with how it came together. Seeing the watered down glue bead on top was weird at first, but once it was dry I flipped it over and literally nothing moved. It has good variation in texture and it smells nice. Worth the effort. Kinda ironic I played with the packaging before the mini. Least it wasn’t an appliance box, I don’t think my knees could take it.
