Italian Divisionism reflects the ideological and esthetic confusion which rocked the peninsula at the end of the century. Profoundly impregnanted with realism, which, for intellectuals brought up on Tolstoy, Dostoevski, Morris, Zola, and Verga, still seems the best form of expression, the Divisionists progressively tend toward a diffuse Symbolism by means of a logical exaltation of the conquests of progress, in the center of which is light in all it’s forms and interpretations.
