With the terrain done, time to move on the warbands. I’m thinking a trimethyl borate style flame. Tested some color combos in Procreate and settled on this one.
I had primed flat with a medium grey rattle can, so I took the opportunity to practice zenithal with my airbrush. I ordered some Green Stuff World Dust, but predicting international shipping and customs processing is pointless. I used Vallejo Black ink and thinned down Reaper Dragon White paint, and I think it worked fine.
I sealed it with a coat of gloss varnish for the wash, with mixed results. Initially I did an oil wash and it slid right off the models. I tried redistributing over the course of several hours, but found it all puddled on the bases in the morning.
My second attempt, I cut the oil paint with white spirits instead. It evaporated pretty quickly, but it mostly dried where I put it. It took a couple coats, but overall it was much more pleasant than my initial experience with the battle arena. I’m going to hold out judgment on oil washes a while longer.
I was overly heavy handed with my silver dry brush on the armor, leaving speckles to be caught by the camera. Definitely something to be more aware of in the future, but it’s not visible at the table unless they’re up your nose.
Since I decided to go with a cold green flame, I tried to keep the rest of the model on the warm end of neutral, peaking with a good complement, and dark enough to set off the OSL.
I experienced the water reactivation for myself, with mixed results. I did some layered highlights on faces, metallics where needed, and black ink to tone the armor. Overall I’m pretty pleased, given the amount of time I’ve actually spent on them thus far.
Next up is to prep for OSL, but it won’t be cool enough to airbrush until after dark, or tomorrow. I should really do something about that situation, but moving is such a pain in the arse.
