I will not be sad when this one is no longer lurking in my peripheral vision, to say nothing of all the creepy crawly reference images. I was less concerned about anatomical correctness than overall impression, but I now know far more about arachnid joints than I ever cared to.

The legs are 1/4″ square balsa filed to a taper, partially broken, and reinforced with a bead of superglue, to simulate the joints. The thorax and abdomen were attached to the undercarriage with air dry clay, which was later trimmed and reinforced with hot glue.

I’m still not sure how I feel about the blue foam, but I’m getting used to it. Its not spongy like the pink stuff, and it takes texture differently, but it also takes far less incidental damage from handling.


Week three, my mishap with the chisel is mostly a memory. A fairly gross memory, but a textbook recovery.
