Flutterby

I wanted the butterfly to be the focal point, and I’ve wanted to try painting on glass for a while, so I went with a 5″x7″ acrylic sheet and Plaid Glass Gallery faux leading. The paint was rather a blobby mess. I transferred it into a smaller bottle and thinned it with a touch of water, but it wasn’t all that great either way. The best solution I found was to goop it on and then recut the lines with a hobby knife and remove the excess.

I mixed Mod Podge with Vallejo inks for the glass sections. Layering did not result in a lot of visible variation, but does cut down on translucency. It’s really a one-shot deal. I used untinted Mod Podge to frost the background; I just kept messing with it as it got tacky.

Another Brick in the Wall

I used 1/2″ XPS for the wall and cut a trench for the acrylic.

Getting drunk with a blue caterpillar

I had no idea what I was doing, so I started with the backside of the caterpillar. In the end, I did the face separately and then recessed it in place. The feets I mostly avoided and the hookah was built from random bits and bobs, but seems to get the point across.

Shroom Sitter

Once all the pieces were done, I secured install pins.

Garden Plotting

Originally I was going to make a stone floor, but the night before the deadline I decided it was a great time to try more shit I’d never done before. It’s mostly joint compound with sand, followed by wood glue and sand.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to speed up drying time with the heat gun, but it was fun to make the glue bubble up.

By the time it was ready to flock, it was getting late and I was pooped. I dumped the grass, stuck on a couple tufts, installed the bits, and called it done. I’m not happy with the landscaping, or the color on the mushroom, but it is what it is.
