Highlighting is…challenging, to say the least. I’m not sure if I’m too heavy handed, looking too closely, or too concerned about obvious transitions. Probably all of the above. It’s definitely making me pay more attention to light and color in general. It’s frustrating, but its not like that’s new; anything worth learning requires a certain amount of muddling on. At this point, I still don’t know what I don’t know. The side-by-side does help. Why is it easier to spot problems and be objective about a picture? More references while painting would probably help as well.
Next to decide, what to do about the faces. The brows are quite exaggerated and none of my initial attempts were worth letting dry. Not sure I’m ready to try free-handing yet, but in for a penny…
The best way out is always through.
